* Ecuador’s national assembly has voted to reject an amended version of the ‘public finances law’ put forward by President
Lenín Moreno. The bill,
intended to tackle Ecuador’s fiscal crisis by imposing restrictions on public spending, was initially tabled by Moreno back on 10 April, but has been passed back and forth between the legislature and the executive for months. The latest version presented by Moreno was approved by the assembly’s economic regime commission, but has been rejected by the legislature as a whole, by 52 votes to 47, with 31 abstentions. Because the assembly
approved a version of the bill back in May, Moreno will be able to force through his own amended version without legislative approval on 15 July; however, the bill will likely then face an unconstitutionality complaint.
