*The north-eastern state Nuevo León, one of Mexico’s industrial powerhouses, has implemented new restrictions on movement following an escalation in the number of deaths and hospitalisations caused by the coronavirus (Covid-19) in the state. In a statement, Governor
Jaime Rodríguez Calderón warned that, should the contagion rate continue at current levels, the public health system would
“totally collapse” and the state would have to shut down all economic activity restarted on 1 June. The restrictions brought back in from 3 July include measures such as further restrictions on movement of people and limits on opening hours for non-essential businesses. Rodríguez has stressed that this does not consist of a curfew, and that he is not considering such a measure. On 2 July, Nuevo León registered 22 deaths caused by Covid-19, its highest number to date, bringing its total to 414. Meanwhile, those hospitalised with virus symptoms reached 961, of which 231 were intubated.
