In brief: Foreign tourism won’t return to Guatemala until 2021

* According to Guatemalan exporters’ association (Agexport), which represents local entrepreneurs that participate and compete in world markets, local tourism in Guatemala will not return until the third or fourth quarter of 2020, and foreign tourism will not restart until 2021. In a virtual press conference Agexport’s president, Andreas Kuestermann, added that Guatemala’s tourism sector won’t return to where it was financially in 2019 for at least two years, and that it could take up to five years to recover. According to Aída Fernández, the head of Agexport’s services sector, sustainable tourism is currently operating at 10% capacity, and medical tourism is operating at 40%, a figure which Agexport expects will increase.
