In brief: Bolivia’s economy minister resigns

* Bolivia’s economy minister, José Luis Parada, has resigned, citing “personal issues”. Interim president, Jeanine Áñez, quickly named Óscar Ortiz as his successor – Ortiz had previously served as the minister of productive development, with José Abel Martínez now replacing him in this role. Growing criticisms of the interim government’s economic strategy likely played a part in Parada’s departure– a poll published yesterday by the Centro Estratégico Latinoamericano de Geopolítica (Celag) found that 65.2% of respondents voice disapproval of the administration’s economic management. Ortiz emphasised that his primary task will be to boost employment, with the Áñez government having faced criticism for so far failing to deliver on its promise to create jobs for those who lost their jobs due to the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. Ortiz’s background is in business rather than economics, unlike Parada, but he enjoys far greater political visibility – his appointment likely reflects Áñez’s need to reverse perceptions of her economic management in order to rescue her campaign to be elected president.
