In brief: China suspends shrimp imports from Ecuador over Covid-19 scare

* Ecuador’s President Lenín Moreno has contacted China’s President Xi Jinping to try and resolve the Chinese government’s suspension of shrimp imports from three Ecuadorean companies over concerns about sanitary procedures. China’s customs agency reported that coronavirus (Covid-19) testing had identified traces of the virus on packaging from three companies – Industrial Pesquera Santa Priscila, Empacreci, and Edpacif – although not in the shrimp inside these packages. Moreno emphasised on Twitter his desire “to find joint solutions, normalise the situation, and maintain our international prestige in that market”; the seafood industry represents a major export for Ecuador, and there are concerns that other countries will follow China’s lead. Ecuador's health minister, Juan Carlos Zevallos, similarly sought to reassure domestic consumers that there is no evidence that Covid-19 can be transmitted through food.
