In brief: Costa Rica’s gov’t unveils bill to cut spending

* The Costa Rican government led by President Carlos Alvarado has presented a legislative initiative to cut government spending by a total of ₡457.7bn (US$786m) in 2020, in order to address the fiscal impact of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic which has resulted in a 21% decrease in government revenue. The legislative proposal includes plans to cut the state budget by ₡328bn and reduce working hours for some public servants which will save ₡129.7bn.
