In brief: Good year for coffee exports in Brazil

* Brazil’s council of coffee exporters (Cecafé) has released the latest figures on coffee exports, according to which Brazilian producers exported 39.9m sacks of coffee (one sack = 60kg) during the July 2019-June 2020 harvest year. This is the second-highest volume of coffee exports on record, behind the 2018-2019 harvest year, representing a 3.6% decrease on that period. The value of this year’s exports totalled US$5.11bn, down 5.9% compared with 2018-2019. Cecafé attributed this decrease to lower coffee prices and reduced production, as coffee is a biannual product with a good harvest every other year. Cecafé’s president, Nelson Carvalhaes, expressed optimism about the 2020-2021 harvest, noting that the coffee sector had remained resilient during the disruption caused by the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic over the past four months. Carvalhaes highlighted that in the last year Brazil exported coffee to 125 countries, and even increased sales to other coffee-producing countries.
