A comment by a supreme court (STF) magistrate has reignited some of the tensions between the judiciary and the executive in Brazil. On 11 July, Justice Gilmar Mendes expressed dissatisfaction with the handling of the coronavirus (Covid-19) public health emergency by President Jair Bolsonaro’s government and criticised the military for its role in supporting this response. As well as prompting a backlash from the army generals in government, Mendes’ comments draw attention to the actions of the armed forces as their influence over some areas of government, notably the activities of environmental agencies, is expanding.
