In brief: Ecuador’s coffee exports stay strong

* Ecuador’s national association of coffee exporters (Anecafé) has announced that coffee exports fell by 2% year-on-year in the first five months of 2020, with 164,238 sacks (each 60kg) exported between January and May this year. Anecafé manager, Pablo Pinargote, claimed that in March the organisation had projected a decline of as much as 25% as a result of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, but noted with optimism that coffee production has in fact remained steady, and export demand only slightly decreased. Reduced demand has also resulted in slightly lower prices, and the drop in coffee export value in the first five months of the year was more significant, falling by 7% to a total of US$23.6m.
