ECUADOR: Electoral exclusions shake up the race

Ecuador’s President Lenín Moreno may have ruled out running for re-election in 2021, but his influence is nonetheless likely to be felt strongly in February’s vote. While the government’s dwindling popularity threatens to undermine any candidate deemed by the public to be associated with it, Moreno has previously recognised that the long-term success of his flagship fiscal austerity agenda [WR-20-21] is likely to be dependent on the election of a like-minded successor.
