PARAGUAY: Battling coronavirus and criticisms

After having initially been successful in containing the spread of coronavirus (Covid-19), Paraguay has recently been facing a surge in new infections, as well as recording new deaths for several consecutive days (overall, fatalities remain in the low double digits). This presents President Mario Abdo Benítez’s government with a challenge, as it moves forward with plans to re-open the economy and faces pressure to relax restrictions on international movement, amid criticisms from the political opposition over the apparently selective application of these rules following a one-day visit by former Argentine president Mauricio Macri (2015-2019) last week.
