Mexico: On 22 July Mexico’s federal senate issued a statement noting that Mexican senators, agricultural organisations, producers, and federal government agencies are prepared to defend Mexico’s commercial interests if the US applies protectionist measures on seasonal agricultural products. According to the senate statement, some US legislators are trying to pressure the US government to halt the bilateral trade of seasonal products, to protect US producers and appeal to voters before the US presidential election in November. The statement warns that such actions are not compatible with the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) on regional trade which took effect on 1 July, and that Mexico would respond strongly to protect its interests. The statement cites
Luz María de la Mora, deputy minister for foreign trade at Mexico’s economy ministry, as warning that these actions would jeopardise successes achieved in the agricultural sector by both countries. According to senator
José Narro Céspedes, president of the senate’s agriculture, farming, fish, and rural development committee, 75% of Mexico’s trade of agri-food products in 2019 (worth a global total of US$68.2bn) was done with the US and Canada.
