In brief: Colombia stands by Bogotá metro plans

* Colombia’s finance minister, Alberto Carrasquilla, has signed a resolution certifying that the government will act as a guarantor for the Bogotá Metro Company to obtain Col$2.4trn (US$653m) for the construction of the first line of the Bogotá metro. After years of debate and discussion, in November 2019 a Chinese consortium (made up of China Harbour Engineering Company and Xi’an Metro) signed a US$4.5bn deal to deliver the project, only for the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic to disrupt plans to start construction. President Iván Duque recently emphasised the role of public-private partnerships on infrastructure projects as a key element of Colombia’s economic recovery, citing the Bogotá metro as one such project; the government will hope that this show of support serves to dismiss any concerns about the future of the project.
