In brief: Uruguay launches barge, seeks to revive route to Argentina and Brazil

* Uruguay’s President Luis Alberto Lacalle Pou has participated in the unveiling of the country’s first container ship that will transit between the capital, Montevideo, and the city of Paysandú (Paysandú department), 374km to the northwest along the Uruguay River, a river long out of trade use that links the country to neighbours Argentina and Brazil. At the event, Lacalle Pou said that many Uruguayans “dream” of activating this waterway for transport, and that if Argentina and Brazil come on board then the whole area has a “very promising future”, and many jobs will be created.
