In brief: Argentina’s electricity regulator finds “irregularities” in Macri-era deal

* Argentina’s national electricity regulator (Enre) has revealed that it has discovered “irregularities in calculations of fines and other quantities” in an agreement signed in May 2019 between the government led by former president Mauricio Macri (2015-2019) and energy distribution companies Edenor and Edesur. According to a statement by the productive development ministry, Enre uncovered the information during an audit requested by the judiciary in reference to the case in which the former energy minister Gustavo Lopetegui (2019), and others, stand accused of embezzling public funds. The statement indicates that Enre’s findings provide “elements of proof” that can contribute to clearing up the case and nullifying the original agreements.
