NICARAGUA: International community piles on the pressure

In late June the Organization of American States (OAS) General Secretary Luis Almagro announced that he would request that OAS members declare a “rupture of the democratic order” in Nicaragua. This would bring the government led by President Daniel Ortega one step closer to facing sanctions from the OAS which could include the suspension or termination of its member state status. Almagro’s remarks follow an OAS report presented in late 2019 which had determined that the actions by the Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN) government -which since April 2018 has been carrying out a crackdown on opponents, whom it accuses of attempting to carry out a coup - qualify as undemocratic under Art. 20 of the Inter-American Democratic Charter. Almagro’s remarks come as the Ortega government is facing growing pressure from other members of the international community over the allegations of human rights violations.
