BOLIVIA: Election delay brings protesters back on streets

Article 169 of Bolivia’s constitution, which saw interim president Jeanine Áñez take office in November 2019 following the removal of former president Evo Morales (2006-2019), mandates that “new elections shall be called within a maximum period of 90 days”. With the news that these elections have been delayed for a third time (this time from 6 September to 18 October), Áñez’s time in office looks set to exceed 12 months, while her opponents fear that she harbours hopes of extending her rule further still.
