ECUADOR: Tensions flare as debt deadline approaches

President Lenín Moreno’s staunch commitment to upholding Ecuador’s reputation in the international financial market has cost his government much of its domestic support – and, according to his opponents, the lives of many Ecuadoreans, in the face of spending cuts and the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. All eyes are now on the ongoing debt restructuring negotiations with foreign bondholders, the endgame of Moreno’s long-term strategy, and perhaps the final chance to salvage his presidential legacy.
