PANAMA: Protests erupt over proposed labour changes

A new legislative bill tabled by Panama’s labour ministry (Mitradel) is serving as the latest rallying point of opposition to the government led by President Laurentino Cortizo. With trade unions warning that it will weaken workers’ rights, the issue is serving as a flash point for wider discontent with the Cortizo government over its handling of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, which has left Panama with the highest number of confirmed cases in Central America (62,223 as of 28 July) and second highest death toll (1,349).
