In brief: Brazilian retail on track to recover after worst decline since 2016

* Brazil’s national statistics institute (IBGE) has released June’s retail trade figures, showing a continued recovery from the damage inflicted by the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, but also revealing that Brazilian retail sales in the first six months of 2020 were at their lowest since the 2016 economic recession. Retail trade in January-June fell by 3.1% year-on-year, with a monthly decline of 17% in April compared with the previous month as social distancing and isolation measures limited the sector’s capacity to do business. Since April, the retail sector has shown signs of recovery, growing by 14.4% in May compared with the previous month, and by a further 8% in June. Year-on-year, retail trade increased by 0.5% in June.
