* The Dominican Republic’s President
Danilo Medina has instructed the country’s environment ministry to revoke an environmental permit authorising Spanish tourism company, Globalia, to construct and operate the Leaf Bayahíbe hotel complex in the Guaraguao-Punta Catuano recreational area of the Cotubanamá national park (previously known as East national park). The park is part of the national system of protected areas of the Dominican Republic and located in the furthest limit of the southeast of the country, between the provinces of La Romana and La Altagracia. According to the official resolution, on 28 January the presidency set up a commission to consider the permit for the project, which proposed constructing 96 environmentally friendly wooden cabins and attached facilities, and its impact. The commission presented its report on 31 July. Medina’s decision has been hailed as a victory by environmental groups such as Coalición para la Defensa de las Áreas Protegidas.
