In brief: Formal job losses slow in Mexico

* Mexico’s social security institute (IMSS) has published formal sector employment figures for July which show a substantial reduction in the number of jobs being lost during the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, with 3,907 redundancies in July compared with 83,311 in June. However, while the redundancy rate has slowed, the job loss total from January to July this year is 925,490, of which 75.1% were permanent positions. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has said this trend is being reversed in August. As of 11 August, he stated, 30,000 workers had found new jobs or had been re-contracted.
