COLOMBIA: Duque divides energies at crucial juncture

Colombia’s President Iván Duque reached the midpoint of his tenure on 7 August with a political and judicial crisis to add to the health and economic crises he already faces. The decision by the supreme court (CSJ) to place former president Álvaro Uribe (2002-2010) under house arrest three days earlier on charges of witness tampering and procedural fraud re-exposed Colombia’s political cleavage at a time when the country most needs consensus in the face of a surge of coronavirus (Covid-19) cases amid a reopening designed to mitigate the economic impact of the virus.
