ARGENTINA: Political chasm returns
The deep political differences that separate Argentina’s ruling Partido Justicialista (PJ, Peronists) on the Left and its political opponents on the Right, known as ‘la grieta’ (‘the chasm’) is once again resurfacing in Argentina. The proposal by the government led by President Alberto Fernández to reform the national judiciary to make it more efficient and independent caused an uproar among the Juntos por el Cambio (JxC) main centre-right opposition coalition. JxC fears that the reform is nothing more than an attempt to try to exert greater control over the courts in order to shield Vice President Cristina Fernández and her associates who have been indicted in various corruption cases dating back to her time as president (2007-2015). With JxC vowing to stop the reform from being approved, the matter threatens to break down relations in congress.
