CHILE: Mapuche conflict causes waves

After a particularly violent flare-up in tensions between the indigenous Mapuche and Chilean authorities in early August, arson attacks by Mapuche activists in the southern region of La Araucanía have continued. The government led by President Sebastián Piñera is facing conflicting calls on how to address the situation: human rights defenders and large parts of civil society advocate a resolution through dialogue, while some business sectors are demanding a rapid end to a conflict that impedes their work.
