HONDURAS: Impunity concerns deepen

“A Honduran tragedy”. This was the response by the spokesperson for the Honduran Episcopal Conference (CEH), Juan Ángel López, to the recent dismissal of charges against 22 of the 26 accused in the so-called ‘Pandora’ case - described by US Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs Michael Kozak as an “emblematic corruption case”. While the attorney general, Óscar Chinchilla, has since said he will appeal the decision, it adds to other concerns about the direction of anti-corruption efforts in Honduras, especially since the entry into effect of the contentious new criminal code in June [WR-20-26] and departure of the Mission to Support the Fight against Corruption and Impunity in Honduras (Maccih) at the start of the year.
