Rowley retains power for PNM in Trinidad & Tobago

The ruling People’s National Movement (PNM) under Prime Minister Keith Rowley declared victory in Trinidad & Tobago on 10 August in a close contest against the opposition United National Congress (UNC) under former prime minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar (2010-2015). The result provided vindication for Rowley who opted to go to the polls early on the strength of his government’s record against the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic rather than wait until December when cases might have taken hold and the economic repercussions been felt more keenly. The UNC refused to accept the result, however, and demanded a recount in five constituencies, delaying an official declaration by the Elections and Boundaries Commission (EBC).
