Arancha González Laya has met her new counterpart from the Dominican Republic (DR),
Roberto Álvarez, in Santo Domingo, following the inauguration of
Luis Abinader as the DR’s new president on 16 August. The two reportedly discussed Spanish investment opportunities in the DR, as well as cooperation over trade, the United Nations, the climate crisis, and the current health emergency caused by the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. Gónzalez Laya told Spanish newswire
EFE that the DR has
“a great network of free trade zones, where there are many possibilities to deepen our commercial and investment ties”. Gónzalez Laya mentioned possibilities for Spanish investment in technology, agriculture, medical equipment, and pharmaceuticals, and highlighted the DR’s trade agreements with the US, the European Union, and other countries in Latin America. Gónzalez Laya invited Álvarez to visit Madrid, to further discuss commercial and investment opportunities.
