Hoping to clear up past corruption

The Mexican government has secured the extradition of a key figure implicated in some of the major investigations into corruption by the previous administration led by Enrique Peña Nieto (2012-2018). The expectation is that the interrogation of Emilio Lozoya Austin will help prosecutors to fully clear up the cases in which he has been implicated - including the government bribery scheme centred around Brazilian engineering firm Odebrecht. This would allow the incumbent government led by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to claim that progress is being made in the fight against corruption.
