In brief: Bolivia’s trade figures still shaped by Covid-19

* Bolivia’s national statistics institute (INE) has released the country’s foreign trade figures for July, according to which exports totalled US$552.7m and imports totalled US$567.4m. Both figures are substantially lower than those recorded in the same month last year (US$857.4m for exports, and US$803.9m for imports), reflecting the continued impact of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic on trade, but nonetheless represent a significant improvement on the US$239.6m export value and US$295.2m import value recorded in April. INE attributed this improvement primarily to the return of activities in the mining sector, but noted that continued restrictions still prevented the industry from operating at full capacity. Ibo Blazicevic, president of the private sector lobby Cámara Nacional de Industrias (CNI), argued that these figures show the need for a further loosening of controls, despite the continued spread of Covid-19 in Bolivia.
