Ecuador’s government is appealing to the international community to improve surveillance and control of fishing activities in the region, several weeks after the widely reported arrival of 260, mainly China-flagged, fishing vessels near the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) of the Galápagos archipelago. The vocal response of the government led by President Lenín Moreno at the time prompted the US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, to put out a statement criticising the “predatory fishing practices” of China, whose government has since made several gestures to the Moreno administration.
