Panama and US agree to create joint anti-money laundering task force

Panama: On 17 August US National Security Advisor Robert O’Brien visited Panama to meet President Laurentino Cortizo. After the meeting, the two governments announced the expansion of the Growth in the Americas/América Crece Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), which, first signed in 2018, seeks to catalyse private sector investment in infrastructure in order to encourage economic growth in the Americas. O’Brien and President Cortizo also discussed the creation of a bilateral task force to tackle money laundering and corruption, and the donation to Panama of 50 ventilators, 6,600 testing kits, and other medical supplies to tackle the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. The new Anti-Money Laundering/Corruption Task Force will consist of Panamanian officials who will be trained and advised by the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI.) The donation of medical supplies to tackle Covid-19 formed part of the US$4.4m worth of aid that the US has given to Panama since the start of the pandemic.
