CHILE: Rising concern over constitutional referendum

Chile’s constitutional referendum has been billed as an essential step to build a new consensus after the deep divisions and widespread protests that shook the country in late 2019. Initially scheduled for 26 April, the referendum was postponed to 25 October because of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. Now, with the virus still undefeated, there is hesitation over whether a second postponement might be needed, and some worry over the ability of the vote to actually break the country’s political logjam.
