Death of Cuban hunger-striker reignites familiar concerns

The recent death of Cuban political dissident Yosvani Aróstegui Armenteros, following a 40-day hunger strike, has subjected the Cuban government led by President Miguel Díaz-Canel to fresh scrutiny regarding human rights. It comes as the international community is already signalling concern about the issue. This was evidenced in a new report on human rights in Cuba by the Inter-American Human Rights Commission (IACHR) – the first such report in 37 years – which cited “worrying information it has received about the serious human rights situation” on the island.
