REGION: Eradication figures dominate counter-drug debate

The president of Peru’s anti-drug agency Comisión Nacional para el Desarrollo y Vida Sin Drogas (Devida), Rubén Vargas, voiced criticism on 1 August of a report on coca eradication in Peru, published by the US Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP). Vargas condemned “serious mistakes” in the report - most notably the claim that coca production in the country had expanded by 38% between 2018 and 2019 – and lamented that it had “cast into doubt Peru’s sustained commitment to the fight against illicit drugs”.
