PANAMA: Seeking to reboot the economy

President Laurentino Cortizo continues to trumpet efforts by his government to relaunch Panama’s economy, which he recently forecast would shrink by 9% in 2020 due to the impact of the coronavirus (Covid-19), and boost jobs. These claims have yet to satisfy groups such as the powerful construction workers’ union Sindicato Único de Trabajadores de la Construcción y Similares (Suntracs) which have been staging protests over recently approved amendments to the labour code [WR-20-31], which they warn weaken workers’ rights, among other more long-running complaints.
