Emergency handout extended as economic recession confirmed. On 1 September, Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro confirmed the extension until the end of the year of the so-called ‘auxílio emergencial’, the emergency basic income that was launched in April to help the country’s most vulnerable weather the worst of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic. The monthly handout of R$600 (US$112), or R$1,200 for single mothers, will be reduced to R$300 for the last four months of the year. The handout was disbursed to over 30% of the population (some 66m people) between April and August and is calculated to have saved tens of millions of Brazilians from falling into poverty.
