* The Nicaraguan government and Taiwan's ambassador to Nicaragua, Jaime Chin-Mu Wu, have announced the signing of an agreement worth US$1.46m to support the food programme Bono Productivo Alimentario (BPA). BPA began in 2007 and aims to boost rural production of food for family consumption in Nicaragua, with the surplus sold on the domestic market to build productive agro-industrial supply chains. During the signing of the agreement, the two sides highlighted close bilateral relations, noting that since 2008 Taiwan has supported programmes such as BPA and a microfinance programme which began in 2017 and provides small rural firms with loans. Nicaragua, Guatemala, and Honduras retain diplomatic relations with Taiwan while Costa Rica became the first country in Central America to break ties with it in favour of mainland China in 2007. It has since been followed by Panama, El Salvador and the Dominican Republic.
