MEXICO: Schism opens between governors and López Obrador

The rift between President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and governors representing parties opposed to his ruling left-wing Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena) is deepening. On 7 September the governors of ten Mexican states that have been most critical of the López Obrador administration’s handling of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, from both a public health and economic perspective, withdrew from the national confederation of governors (Conago). Quitting Conago, a forum designed to enhance coordination between federal and state governments on national political priorities, is of greater symbolic than practical significance. But, it does underscore the entrenched political polarisation in Mexico that conspires against a coordinated response to the pandemic.
