The rift between President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and governors representing parties opposed to his ruling left-wing Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena) is deepening. On 7 September the governors of ten Mexican states that have been most critical of the López Obrador administration’s handling of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, from both a public health and economic perspective, withdrew from the national confederation of governors (Conago). Quitting Conago, a forum designed to enhance coordination between federal and state governments on national political priorities, is of greater symbolic than practical significance.
