In brief: Brazil’s retail sector continues to recover

* Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has announced that retail trade grew by 5.2% in July compared with the previous month, as the sector continues to recover from a sharp drop in sales resulting from measures implemented to contain the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic since March. July was the third consecutive month of retail trade growth, following monthly rises of 13.3% in May and 8.5% in June. July sales were up 5.5% on July 2019, although accumulated figures for the first seven months of 2020 show a 1.8% year-on-year fall in sales. Wholesale retail, including vehicles, machinery parts and construction materials, increased by 7.2% compared with June, and by 1.6% year-on-year. The three retail categories that saw the most monthly growth were books, magazines, and stationery (26.1%); clothing (25.2%); and office equipment (11.4%). Supermarkets and food and drink products were the only retail category not to register a monthly increase in sales, remaining stable (0.0%).
