MEXICO: Domestic trade recovers but remains below pre-pandemic levels

Mexico’s national statistics institute (Inegi) released on 21 August its latest figures on domestic trade, which includes both retail and wholesale of goods and services. The data was gathered through Inegi’s monthly survey of trade businesses (Emec) and covers the month of June, when many of the restrictions imposed on economic and social activities to try to curb the spread of the coronavirus (Covid-19) were lifted. While the data shows signs that Mexico’s economy is now recovering from the record fall in activity that was recorded following the introduction of the restrictions, this recovery is still tentative.
