CHILE: Protests mark coup anniversary ahead of plebiscite

This year’s commemorations of the 11 September 1973 coup which overthrew president Salvador Allende (1970-1973) and installed the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet (1973-1990) in Chile took place in an even more divisive climate than usual. The legacy of the Pinochet dictatorship remains a polarising issue in Chilean society, a polarisation now reflected and exacerbated in the discussions ahead of the 25 October referendum on whether to re-write the country’s Pinochet-era constitution.
