GUYANA: Racial tensions erupt over murders

Guyana is facing some of its worst racial unrest in years following the recent murders of two Afro-Guyanese teenagers and an apparent reprisal killing of an Indo-Guyanese youth. The violence is exacerbating the divisions exposed by the fraught March general election which eventually produced a victory for the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) led by Irfaan Ali (mainly backed by Indo-Guyanese) after a protracted recount process and a series of stalling tactics by his predecessor David Granger (2015-2020) and the A Partnership for National Unity-Alliance for Change (Apnu-AFC) coalition (which draws support primarily from the Afro-Guyanese community).
