ARGENTINA: Abandoning consensus politics

Like many newly elected leaders, in his inauguration speech Argentina’s President Alberto Fernández pledged that he would try to unite the country by building a broad political consensus over government policy. But less than a year into his four-year term Fernández and his Partido Justicialista (PJ, Peronist) administration appear intent on imposing their political vision. This is eroding the government’s political capital, stoking polarisation in the country and raising governability concerns going forward.
