* Chile’s environmental court (ITA) has ordered the
“total and definitive closure” of the Pascua Lama open-pit project, owned by Canadian mining giant Barrick Gold, which straddles the border with Argentina. The ITA also maintained a Cl$7bn (US$9.2m) fine imposed by Chile’s environmental regulator (SMA) on the company for environmental damage. The ITA announced its decision after ruling on five charges against the project filed in 2018, where it accepted three of them: non-compliance with environmental obligations relating to the monitoring of glaciers; the monitoring and discharge of waters to a nearby river Estrecho; and the use of an unauthorised methodology for calculating water quality levels. The ITA’s president
Mauricio Oviedo said that it was necessary to close the project as
“there do not seem viable alternatives for [the project] to operate safely the environment and public health”. Greenpeace Chile celebrated the ruling as a
“very important triumph”.End of preview - This article contains approximately 150 words.
