*Commercial flights to El Salvador have resumed six months after these were suspended to stop the spread of the coronavirus (Covid-19). The head of El Salvador’s airport authority (Cepa), Federico Anliker, told reporters that the ‘Óscar Arnulfo Romero y Galdámez’ international airport, located near San Salvador, will work at 20% capacity with flights to 13 destinations, including cities in the US, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica. According to a government press release, operations in the airport will be carried out “under strict biosecurity controls and in an orderly manner”. The government further announced that airlines are now required to ask all passengers for a negative Covid-19 PCR (polymerase chain reaction) test, even after the supreme court ruled last week that requiring a test for Salvadoran nationals and residents to enter the country was unconstitutional. President Nayib Bukele stated that “all airlines wishing to land at our airport will have to require a negative Covid-19 PCR test from all their passengers, taken a maximum of 72 hours before the trip. Otherwise, we will be forced to close the airport again”.
