BRAZIL: Feeling the heat over environmental destruction

A public call from an international entity – be it an NGO, an investment fund or a government – for Brazil to step up environmental protection efforts, followed by a fierce but often incoherent defence from a representative in the Brazilian government, has become a familiar leitmotif under President Jair Bolsonaro’s administration. The past week has yet again seen this pattern repeated several times, as fires raging in the Pantanal and Amazon biomes keep environmental destruction in Brazil in the public eye.
