ARGENTINA: More economic pain on the horizon

After two years of recession, the government led by President Alberto Fernández was hoping that Argentina’s economy would start to recover in 2020. But the dramatic impact that the government’s response to the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic has had on domestic economic activity has precluded the prospects of recovery. The extensive confinement measures implemented by the Fernández administration to slow the spread of the virus have devastated what was already a shattered economy. The inevitable consequences of this will be a rise in poverty and falling living standards for thousands of Argentines. Counteracting these effects will be the main challenge for the Fernández administration for the next few years.
