MEXICO: Resignation raises questions about government probity

Jaime Fernando Cárdenas Gracia became the eleventh senior government official to quit the administration led by Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador this week. Like many of those before him, Cárdenas has not gone quietly and has denounced a series of irregularities he observed at the Instituto para Devolver al Pueblo lo Robado (Indep), the federal government agency that he has been leading. The accusations raised by Cárdenas pose serious questions about the transparency of the management of state assets by the López Obrador administration. These questions are particularly damaging for an administration that maintains that it is committed to eradicating government corruption.
