HONDURAS: Electoral calendar kicks off amid electoral law controversy

The Honduran electoral authority (CNE) has officially set the date of 14 March 2021 for primary elections ahead of the general election in November next year. The move was met with criticism, however, as it comes in the absence of a new electoral law (LEH) amid disagreements within the legislature preventing its approval. The LEH is widely deemed necessary to address the major flaws exposed by the previous electoral process in 2017, which was contentious due to President Juan Orlando Hernández’s bid for re-election for the ruling Partido Nacional (PN), after a supreme court ruling overturned the constitutional ban on re-election, and multiple claims that fraud took place.
